Surprising causes of oily hair

The greasy hair struggle is real. If you’re dealing with hair that seems to lose their lustre in the blink of an eye, we feel your pain. From sebum production to over-styling, many grease-enhancing factors that can leave you wondering why your hair is so oily. Healthy hair produces a certain amount of sebum or oil to hydrate your scalp and protect your hair. The amount of oil you produce varies depending on your hair type, your hygiene habits, and other lifestyle factors. Sometimes this natural oil can collect on your hair, especially at the root. This gives your hair a slick appearance that some may feel looks dirty. If you feel your hair may be oilier than it should be, keep reading what might be causing it.

1. Over-washing

A somewhat unexpected cause of oily hair is over-washing. That’s right, it’s possible to wash your hair too often. Every time you wash your hair with shampoo, it sends the scalp the signal to produce more sebum. If you’re washing your hair too often, your scalp gets the message that it needs to be in oil production overdrive. This can result in an oily build-up on your scalp.

2. Hair type

Straight hair is especially prone to collecting oil. That’s because the hair shaft doesn’t have any texture or wave to it, so oil slides straight down the hair shaft and collects all over your head. It also makes oil in your hair more visible when hair hangs straight down.

3. Your hair products

Another cause of oily hair is the type of products you use. Sebum is a type of oil, which means that simply washing it with water doesn’t break it up. Rinsing your hair with just water or skipping the shampoo step and using only conditioner can cause the oil to build up. While it might not be easy to spot the oil when your hair is drying, it quickly appears oily again only a few hours or so later. That’s because only certain ingredients, found in most shampoos, can break down the oil that builds up on your hair.

Greasy hair equals to heavy feeling hair. To combat this, it is important your hair feels refreshed. Use a shampoo that is formulated with tea tree oil which helps to detoxify while gently cleanse and volumize hair. Next, use a conditioner. Your hair will be left feeling renewed and refreshed. If you’re looking for a quick fix to greasy hair, use a dry shampoo. Use your fingers to massage the product into the scalp and comb through your hair, if needed.

Some hair types are more prone to oily build-up than others. Remember, oil is just part of the way your body protects your scalp, and there’s nothing dirty or wrong about a little oil build-up in your hair. Vegetables for healthy hair

Vegetables are our best friends when we are trying to lose some pounds. They are also great for our hair. These fruits and vegetables for hair growth contain vitamins, fibres and minerals which are known to help with hair growth and maintaining the texture and smoothness. You can include these beneficial vegetables to your diet for healthy hair and to improve hair growth.

1. Spinach

Amongst those vegetables that are considered nutritious for your hair, spinach tops the list. Full of edible fibre, spinach is a rich source of iron and zinc in addition to other essential vitamins and minerals. These two minerals are highly necessary for the hair, as the absence of zinc and iron often leads to hair loss in many people.

2. Carrots

Carrots are the second-best vegetable for hair growth. Carrots are a rich store of Vitamin B7 or biotin that is considered a healthy tonic for the hair. Biotin is essential for hair re-growth. At the same time, it helps to strengthen the hair roots so that hair does not fall out easily.

3. Onions

Onions are an affluent source of zinc, iron and biotin, all of which are needful for hair growth. In addition to hair growth, onion is a wonderful vegetable that helps in preventing the premature greying of hair.

4. Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of beta-carotene. Our body transforms beta-carotene into Vitamin A. Beta-carotene is required for cell repair within the body. Sweet potatoes fulfil the dearth of Vitamin A to a large extent.

5. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are rich sources of antioxidants. Antioxidants are also effective cell-repairing agents. They help to remove impurities and toxins from the surface of the scalp. One can either consume tomatoes directly or apply the tomato pulp on the scalp for better results. Tomatoes help to improve the shine and lustre of the hair.

6. Garlic

Although having a pungent smell, garlic is an ideal tonic for the hair. It is good to add this to your regular diet chart, as it contains very few calories. Besides, garlic contains a very high sulfur content, which is considered best for hair re-growth.

7. Beetroots

Having a red-coloured vegetable increases your lycopene, which is known to increase the hair growth rate. Beetroots contain lycopene that helps to stimulate hair growth. In addition to beetroots, most of the reddish vegetables are good for the hair, as they might contain the same nutrient.

8. French Beans

French beans are the richest source of Vitamins A and E. Vitamin E is highly needful for improving the lustre and volume of hair. It also protects your hair from premature greying.

9. Green Chilli

Another rich store of keratin and Vitamin E, green chillies are excellent for fostering hair growth. It also helps to repair the damaged cells of the scalp to promote new hair follicles.

Go from brittle to bouncy with healthy hair habits

Bad hair days are a bummer, but they are no joke. According to a poll, 74% of women say a bad hair day makes them feel less confident. So, when your hair is in good shape, it undoubtedly looks better and makes you feel better. The challenge is your strands are constantly prone to hair damage. With all these potential strand stresses, it’s no surprise that having healthy hair requires effort to keep it looking lush. And while there isn’t a secret shortcut to healthier hair, taking time to keep strands strong is worth the commitment. With small tweaks to your routine, maintaining great hair can be effortless.

Start to establish healthy habits in your hair care routine for great hair days ahead!

1. Brush your hair before you shower

No matter what your hair texture is, taking 60 seconds to detangle strands will keep them strong. When your hair is wet it is more vulnerable to breakage, so always brush knots out of your hair when it’s dry. Brushing dry hair distributes the natural oils from your scalp down to the ends of your hair and your hair is already smooth and ready to style after you shower.

2. Eat a balanced diet

You already know that you are what you eat. Your hair is mostly made up of protein, so eating a balanced diet of protein-rich food is important. Add fish, meat, eggs, beans to your grocery list. Other good sources of hair food include berries, spinach, and avocados, along with anything else rich in vitamins C and E which will help boost collagen production, resulting in stronger strands. Learn more about the good food you should include in your daily diet here.

3. Sleep on silk

Make the most of your beauty sleep by swapping out your cotton pillowcase for a silk alternative. This way, you can protect the cuticle of your hair by reducing the amount of friction between your hair and the fabric. You can also try sleeping with your hair in a loose topknot or try a low loose braid if you have thick or textured hair to give you more control of your hair during the night.

 4. Style smarter

To minimize damage from heat styling, invest in professional hot tools that have ionic technology, which will infuse moisture into your hair as you style. Also, you can opt for a curling iron or straightener that is solid ceramic, rather than only having a ceramic coating. This will distribute heat onto your hair evenly, locking in your style quickly so you don’t need to re-apply the iron continuously to get your desired look.

5. Get a trim

You need regular haircuts to ensure that your strands stay healthy and don’t break off at the ends. If you don’t want to lose a lot of length, ask your stylist for a dusting, so only the tips are snipped, which gets rid of damaged ends, but maintains the length.

You will also be delighted to know that Oriental Hair Solutions is having a promotion for the month of September. For only $18, you can enjoy 1 session of Hair Fall Prevention Scalp Therapy and receive a set of complimentary Hair Growth Ampoule and Herbal Hair Tonic (total worth $468). Improve your hair growth in 7 days

Many of us forget that proper nutrition is one of the most important things to help nourish those gorgeous locks on our head. A balanced diet can help you get the key nutrients necessary for keeping your hair in great shape.

On the other hand, what you eat can also have a dramatic effect on hair loss. Consider replacing processed and packaged foods that are very nutrient-poor for more whole, real and natural foods. Many of these processed items are loaded with additives and artificial ingredients that you don’t need. Plus, these processed foods can wreak havoc on the gut.

We have put together a list of the best foods for healthy hair. Load up on these healthy hair all-stars and eat your way to fuller, stronger hair!

Monday: Eggs

Your hair is made up of protein, therefore it is important to ensure that you have enough protein in your diet. Protein is the building block of hair and eggs are one of the richest natural sources of protein.

Tuesday: Spinach and Other Dark Leafy Greens

Iron is an essential mineral that your hair cells require. A deficiency of iron in the body may cause hair loss. When your body is running low on iron, oxygen and nutrients are not getting transported to the hair roots and follicles adequately which can inhibit growth and make your strands weak.

Wednesday: Citrus Fruits

Your body requires Vitamin C for iron absorption. Therefore, you need to add citrus fruits to your diet. Nutritionists recommend that one lime per day is enough to get your daily dose of Vitamin C. You could also opt for oranges. Vitamin C is also required to produce collagen that make capillaries that connect to the hair shafts strong, thus ensuring regular supply of nutrients and quick hair growth.

Thursday: Nuts and Seeds

Omega-3 fatty acids nourish the hair and support thickening. Since your body cannot produce these healthy fats, you need to derive them from your diet. Almonds and walnuts are high in Omega-3 fatty acids. Similarly, flaxseeds can serve as a mid-meal healthy snack while also supplying the essential fats to your hair.

Friday: Whole Grains

Whole grains are rich in biotin along with iron, zinc, and B vitamins. Biotin is required for cell proliferation and plays an important part in producing amino acids (protein) which are required for your hair to grow.

Saturday: Carrots

Drink carrot juice for quick hair growth. The hair contains the fastest growing tissues in the body and vitamin A is required for the growth of every cell. It also helps the scalp in producing the natural sebum oil which keeps it and the roots healthy to boost hair growth.

Sunday: Avocado

Vitamin E improves blood circulation and helps the follicles work more efficiently to promote hair growth. It also maintains the oil and PH levels balance which if exceeds can clog the hair follicles and stop hair growth. Avocado is a great source of Vitamin E and it is also rich in the heart healthy monounsaturated fats. You can add it to your breakfast salad or blend it into a green smoothie.

Caring for your hair after working out

Exercise is essential in preventing heart disease and other illnesses, regulating weight, and managing other aspects of life including sleep, mood, memory, strength, and energy levels. Did you know that the health of your hair correlates with the health of your body? Exercise is good for your hair in the long run! However, workouts cause perspiration and sweat left on your scalp can do quite a bit of damage, which is why you will need to know these post-workout hair care tips to keep your hair fighting fit and looking great too.

1. Use dry shampoo before exercise

We usually exercise first thing in the morning, so we like to use our dry shampoo at night. It will absorb overnight, and our hair will look refreshed. But if you exercise later in the day, you can spray some into your roots before, so it’ll absorb the excess moisture and sweat. The easiest way to get rid of sweat and execute hair care after exercising is also to apply dry shampoo on it.

2. Use hair care oil

Give your hair a good application of tea tree oil to keep bacteria and fungus at bay. But do not apply tea tree oil by itself as it is very potent; mix it with coconut oil and apply it instead. You can also use peppermint oil on your scalp for post-workout hair care. Not only is it refreshing but it is also known to induce hair growth. Mix a few drops of the oil with aloe vera juice and water before applying.

3. Drink enough water

Two-thirds of our body consists of water, which directly promotes metabolism. Exercising leads to sweating. You lose large amounts of fluids and if the weather is hot, it is natural for you to feel thirsty during the workout and suppressing your thirst is not a very good idea.Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day in addition to the water you consume post your workout. Dehydration is the number one cause of a dry scalp.

4. Use sulfate-free shampoo

Pick daily shampoos designed for daily use. That way, you will not be fighting against your delicate scalp’s natural mechanism of keeping your hair moisturised. Use a light-weight moisturising shampoo without sulfate that will not over cleanse your hair. Give your hair a good wash with warm water. Make you sure you don’t you’re your hair every single day though.

These are some post-workout hair tips to keep our hair looking fresh even after a few days! You can also enhance your hair care efforts with the right treatment at Oriental Hair Solutions. Treating Dry and Brittle Hair

Dry and brittle hair is common in men and women of all ages. Although dry hair may be annoying, it’s usually not a sign of a serious health condition. This is because the sebum is not able to reach the ends of the hair as easily as it can in straight or wavy hair.

Environmental factors, your hair care routine, and your hormonal health can all play a role in keeping your hair moist and healthy. Some reasons your hair might be dry include excessive shampooing, exposure to UV light, blow-drying your hair, thyroid dysfunction and repeated exposure to chlorinated water.

Now that you know the possible reasons for dry and brittle hair, we share with you some ways that you can adopt to treat your (or your man’s) dry, brittle hair.

1. Shampoo less frequently

If your hair tends to be dry, you can try reducing your shampooing frequency to two or three times per week. Use cooler water. Using cool water when you’re washing your hair may help your hair retain moisture.

2. Change your shampoo or conditioner

Switching to a shampoo designed specifically for dry hair may help keep your hair moist. Try leave-in conditioners. Such conditioners are left in your hair for 20 to 30 minutes and help moisturize extremely dry hair.

3. Change your brush

Boar bristle brushes and nylon brushes have bristles that are close together. These bristles can help stimulate your scalp and distribute oil throughout your hair.

4. Air dry your hair

Letting your hair air dry can help you avoid potentially damaging heat that dries out your hair. If you do blow-dry your hair, try sticking to the lowest temperature setting.

5. Make lifestyle changes for healthier hair

Even though genetics play a large role in determining your hair health, good lifestyle habits can also be beneficial. Some changes you can make to maximize your hair health include eating a balanced diet, avoid smoking, minimise exposure to the sun and exercise regularly.

Dry hair is a common problem among men. If your hair tends to be dry, you may want to try changing your hair care routine and adopting good lifestyle habits. Enhance your effort with Oriental Hair Solutions Purifying Scalp Therapy to deep cleanse your scalp.

Oriental Hair Solutions is having a promotion for this treatment in July! For only $18, you get to enjoy a session of Purifying Scalp Therapy and get a complimentary Hair Growth Ampoule and Herbal Shampoo. This promotion is worth $438! Furthermore, if you visit our Jean Yip Loft and Ngee Ann City outlets, you get to enjoy the promotion at an exclusive price of only $10! Click here to make your appointment today!

The best vitamins for your hair

Your hair condition is a sign of health or beauty. Like any other parts of your body, hair needs a variety of nutrients to be healthy and grow. While factors such as age, genetics and hormones can also affect hair growth, optimal nutrient intake is the key to encourage your hair to grow. We share with you how these vitamins can boost the growth of your tresses.

1. Vitamin A

All cells need vitamin A for growth. This includes hair, the fastest growing tissue in the human body. Vitamin A also helps skin glands make an oily substance called sebum. Sebum moisturizes the scalp and helps keep hair healthy. Deficiency in vitamin A may lead to several problems, including hair loss. While it is important to get enough vitamin A, too much may be dangerous. Studies show that an overdose of vitamin A can also contribute to hair loss. Good sources include sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, kale and some animal protein.

2. B-Vitamins

B-vitamins help carry oxygen and nutrients to your scalp, which aids in hair growth. You can get B-vitamins from many foods, including whole grains, almonds, meat, fish, seafood and dark, leafy greens. Vitamin B12 is naturally found in animal products, such as fish, meat, poultry, eggs, milk, and milk products. Vitamin B12 is generally not present in plant foods, but fortified breakfast cereals are a readily available source of vitamin B12 with high bioavailability for vegetarians. Do consider supplements as well if you’re a vegatarian or vegan.

3. Vitamin C

Free radical damage can block growth and cause your hair to age. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect against the oxidative stress caused by free radicals and prevent the hair from aging. In addition, your body needs vitamin C to create a protein known as collagen — an important part of hair structure. Vitamin C also helps your body absorb iron, a mineral necessary for hair growth. Strawberries, peppers, guavas and citrus fruits are all good sources of vitamin C.

4. Vitamin D

Low levels of vitamin D are linked to alopecia, a technical term for hair loss. That said, most people don’t get enough vitamin D and it may still be a good idea to increase your intake. Your body produces vitamin D through direct contact with the sun’s rays. Good dietary sources of vitamin D include fatty fish, cod liver oil, some types of mushroom and fortified foods.

5. Vitamin E

Similar to vitamin C, vitamin E is an antioxidant that can prevent oxidative stress and as a result, boosts hair growth. You can include good sources of vitamin E such as sunflower seeds, almonds, spinach and avocados in your diet as and when possible.

Food is the best source of the vitamins you need for hair growth. You will also be delighted to know that Oriental Hair Solutions hair products contain natural active ingredients that are carefully selected with stringent checks and control, which can enhance your efforts to encourage more hair growth. Sleep and your hair

Poor sleep quality leads to several health issues, whether it’s stress, skin issues, energy levels or a poor immune system. Did you know that your sleep cycle can also affect your hair’s overall health? A good and restorative night’s sleep is required for the protein synthesis of the hair and the release of enzymes and growth hormones that are necessary for overall hair health.

How is sleep important for hair growth? Well, epithelial hair follicle stem cells go to work when you sleep, and several good nights of rest can help ensure this process happens seamlessly. Conversely, lack of sleep stops those stem cells from doing their job, and the result could be an impairment in this growth.

Sleep deprivation can eventually lead to stress, and stress has been known to result in telogen effluvium hair loss. This is when stress pushes the hair follicle into a premature “resting state,” which is then followed by a premature “shedding phase.”

The way that sleep affects your body’s natural hormones is probably the most important part of preventing hair loss. The body produces a hormone called melatonin, which helps it regulate sleep cycles. Surprisingly, it also has been shown to increase hair growth. If your body decreases in its melatonin levels, it’s possible that this results in hair loss.

Interestingly, the hair follicles contain “clock genes” that keep the track of your body’s circadian rhythms and regulate your body clock. To put it in simple words, your hair knows when you are sleeping and when you are awake!

Based on a study conducted by researchers of the Research Institute for Time Studies at Yamaguchi University in Japan, it was found when researchers tested the genes in the subjects’ follicles that body-clock gene activity peaked right after a subject had woken up, regardless of the time the subject woke up. This suggested that the brain “turns on” the genes at different times of the morning in different people. Other clock genes followed similar patterns, making it possible to predict “morning people” with just a pluck, the study said.

If it has been determined that stress-induced sleep issues appear to be the culprit of your shedding, there are things that you can do to get your sleep cycle back on track.

  • Cut down on caffeine at least three to four hours before bedtime.
  • Move the TV out of the bedroom if you have one there. The fewer distractions you have, the easier it will be to fall asleep. The same goes for any handheld devices—the blue light our cell phone screens emit can interfere with falling asleep.
  • Replace your curtains with blackout drapes to block out all outdoor light.
  • Try going to bed at the same time every night. Having a routine can help encourage regular sleep.
  • Try to meditate once a day; meditation can aid in relaxation and help reduce stress.
  • Try a white noise machine. The soothing noises can help lull you into dreamland.

Healthy habits, healthy hair

Making sure your hair is as healthy as possible is about more than just which shampoo you use. A range of factors affect how shiny and strong your hair is. A lot of it has to do with how well you care for your hair. Once you start focusing more on maintaining its health, its length will come. Here are some healthy hair habits you should start adopting, which will ultimately help you reach any hair length goals you might have.

1. Feed your hair

Healthy hair starts from within. Protein is the building block of hair, because hair is keratinized protein. Another crucial nutrient is iron. It’s an energy source for the hair. In fact, studies have shown iron deficiency has been linkedto female patterned hair loss. Not saying you must become vegan, but you should include healthy fruits and veggies in your diet and drink a lot of water. If you’re someone who has a hard time with vegetables, blending up a fruit and veggie smoothie is an easy and tasty way to get your daily dose. This will give your hair follicles the nutrients needed to help your hair thrive.

2. Do not overheat your hair

As the saying goes, too much of a good thing can be bad for you. Too much heat too often can lead to damage, and eventually your hair won’t revert to its natural state. Too much or improper use of heat can also lead to dry, brittle hair, breakage and split ends. You can try using heat tools that have clear settings and use the low or medium settings at most. Alternatively, prepare your hair for heat styling at the cleansing and conditioning stage to make sure it is well hydrated.

3. Clean hair and scalp regularly

Hair needs a clean, healthy environment from which to grow. A dirty scalp full of buildup can clog pores and follicles and essentially slow down healthy growth. Also, if you’re constantly scratching your head due to dryness and itchiness, and drugstore shampoos aren’t helping, consult a doctor.

4. Deep condition your hair weekly

This is one healthy hair habit both dermatologists and hairstylists agree on: Incorporate a deep conditioner into your weekly hair care routine for extra hydration. Our hair needs help in the moisture department because of the shape of our hair. So, as the final step in your wash routine, follow up with a good deep conditioner to infuse moisture into the hair.

5. Get regular haircut

Some may find this counteractive to growth, but trimming your hair gets rid of broken and split ends that could lead to more damage. Nipping damage in the bud with a trim when necessary will keep the hair at its healthiest. Experts recommend a trim every six to eight weeks.

6. Wear protective styles

Tucking your hair away in styles that require little to no manipulation for a few days or a few months will help you retain length. You can also consider wearing hats when you go out. The sun oxidizes your hair and dries it out, so while a hat protects your face from the sun, it also protects your scalp from burning and hair from dehydrating. This is as good an excuse as any to treat yourself to a cute sun hat.

Once again, the health of your hair is more important than how long it is. Start focusing on improving its health and before you even realize it, the length will come!

Exercise your way to healthy hair

Hair is an integral part of our human body. Everyone must have faced this issue of hair loss too. There are several exercises to reduce hair loss and help with hair growth. These workouts have a positive effect on your hair as they increase blood flow to your scalp aiding in hair growth.

Doing exercises regularly promotes healthy hair growth. Working out makes the pores in your scalp open up and increases blood flow to your scalp, thus enriching the hair follicles with nutrients.

Here is a collection of scalp exercises for hair growth that prevent hair loss. Take a pick and start right away, exercising your way to the healthy hair that you desire.

1. Scalp Massage

Head massage is a simple, inexpensive, and essential hair growth exercise. This process increases blood flow to your scalp by opening up the pores on your head. Hair follicles receive much-needed nourishment and improve the hair quality too. Simply start by selecting an oil rich in nutrients and warm it up, then part your hair in the middle and apply oil onto your scalp with your fingertips. Thereafter, start with gentle strokes, distributing oil all around the scalp and increase the intensity of strokes to improve blood flow. It helps you relax, reducing stress, thereby helping in hair growth.

2. Jogging

Running is a form of workout that releases fat and unnecessary toxins in the form of sweat. Our skin is full of pores, and it depends on us how effectively we use them. We all take care of the skin on our face, hands, and legs. But often neglect the pores on our scalp. Perspiration that happens during running proves to be a useful exercise for hair growth. Try to start your day by jogging for at least half an hour a day.

3. Neck Exercises

Neck exercises are one of the best ways to help you with hair growth. Use these stretches to release the tensed muscles and stress around the neck. It also keeps your neck injury-free.

First, stand straight with your hands relaxed on the sides. Slowly bend your head forward and bring it back, extending it as much as possible; you should be able to feel the stretch in the neck. Extend your head sideways on each side, stretching on each side for at least 10 seconds.

4. Side To Side Hops

Side to side hops is an exercise that helps your hair grow faster and keeps your cardiovascular health in check. You can do this by standing erect with a gap of hip-width between your feet. Place your feet in such a way as if you are jogging but you need to make sure that you have space for the jump. Slightly bend and jump sideways as much as your body allows. Repeat the same process on both sides.

5. Brushing Hair

Brushing hair is a daily activity part of everybody’s life. You will be delighted to know that proper brushing your hair will reduce hair loss. The natural oils in your scalp are spread to the hair strands by using a boar-bristle brush. Brushing your hair also stimulates blood flow to the scalp providing rich nourishment to the hair follicles, ensuring hair growth.
