How to prevent grey hair

It’s a fact of life that as we get older, the dreaded grey hairs start to set in. For most people, it doesn’t happen until much later in life, but for some, it can happen quite early. If you’ve gone grey young, it’s no reason to panic, and certainly, you’re not alone – a third of us go grey under the age of 30. However, whilst going grey is natural and an accepted part of getting older, losing your natural hair colour can really knock your confidence, and you may go through stages where you feel like you’d do anything to find out how to stop grey hair.

While there’s no cure for going grey (except reaching for the hair dye, of course!), we’ve got some great ideas that’ll teach you how to stop grey hair setting in too soon. These easy, daily things that you can do can help you keep that dreaded grey hair at bay.

1. Use coconut oil

Coconut oil is one of the trendiest things around at the moment. It’s indeed great for everything from your skin to your cooking, and it’s said to be also brilliant for your hair too! Massaging coconut oil into your scalp and hair enriches it with moisture and lauric acid, both of which strengthen and soften your strands. The antioxidants in coconut oil also go a long way towards preventing greys.

2. De-stress

Stress is one of the major causes of going grey early and also causes us to age faster. Try to relax more, find healthy ways to de-stress and make time for yourself, even if it’s just a long hot soak after a stressful day.

3. Drink enough water

Reduce caffeine and alcohol and increase your water intake. Be mindful of how much fried, spicy and acidic foods you eat as these can dehydrate the body. The lack of moisture and hydration can prevent nutrients from reaching the hair follicles, which can cause hair to turn grey.

4. Include more copper in your diet

According to experts, eating walnuts is a great way to fend off those grey hair because of the trace amounts of copper they contain, which can boost the production of melanin. You can also take a multi-vitamin daily as most of them contain copper. Other foods that are rich in copper include turnip greens, lima beans, yams, spinach, and most meats. Copper can also be found in blackberries, pineapple, pomegranates, almonds and pumpkin seeds.

5. Include iodine too

Foods rich in iodine include carrots and spinach. Many of us don’t have enough iodine in our diets, so bumping up the amounts of these foods you eat will keep your locks radiant.

6. Massage the scalp to improve circulation

Circulation and blood flow are vital in the prevention of grey hair. There’s no point eating all the vitamins and minerals if they can’t reach your scalp and hair. To improve the body’s circulation, you should exercise regularly as this will get the blood flowing. Do also massage your scalp with your fingertips daily for five to ten minutes to improve blood circulation on the head.
